Vitamin D - Changes in the Recommended Daily Allowance For Infants, Children and Teenagers

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is recommending that the daily intake of Vitamin D be doubled in children, including infants over 1 month old. The new recommended dose of 400 international units every day is the equivalent of 4 glasses of milk.

Who Should Get Vitamin D Supplements?

Vitamin Children

The short answer is nearly everyone! The recommendation released recently by the AAP targets infants up to teenagers. Vitamin D is not easily found in foods except for organ meats like kidney and liver which children don't usually eat. It is also found in oily fish but again, this is not a regular part of the American diet.

Foods that are fortified with Vitamin D are:
Milk baby formula breakfast cereals orange juice
What Problems Are Associated With Vitamin D Deficiency?

Vitamin D helps calcium be absorbed by the body. Calcium functions in muscle contraction, blood clotting and bone strength.

Without Vitamin D, rickets can develop. Rickets disrupts the development and mineralization of the growth plate in bones which then leads to growth retardation, bone pain, and soft bones.

There has been an increase in rickets from 65 cases between 1975 and 1985 to 166 cases between 1986 to 2003. Once a disease of the past, rickets has been increasing in children.

What Has Caused the Increase in Rickets?

Several cultural and geographical factors help explain the increase in this disease.
Exposure to sunlight helps the body make Vitamin D but fewer kids these days get adequate exposure to sunlight (think video games) for the body to synthesize Vitamin D. Decreased consumption of milk by teenagers Geographical features: Anyone who lives above 40 degrees latitude in the Northern Hemisphere (Boston to northern California) has less exposure to the sun during the winter months. In fact, studies have shown that by the end of winter, young, healthy Bostonians are deficient in Vitamin D because of the decrease in ultraviolet light exposure from November to February.
What Supplements Should I Give My Child?
A multivitamin that has the recommended daily allowance of 400 iu per day. Use chewable tablets or liquid concentrations for small children and make sure to store them in a safe place so that kids won't overdose on them
Do Breast Fed Infants Need Vitamin D?
Yes - infants can take a liquid Vitamin D supplement since breast milk will not have sufficient quantities. Babies who are on formula are already getting fortified formula.

Remember to check with your provider if you have any questions about the use of supplements for your child.
